The closest park to Arusha and the only one in the northern circuit where you can walk and canoe. Mount Meru dominates it, and on clear mornings Kilimanjaro fills the eastern horizon.
Arusha National Park is the answer to a spare day at either end of a longer trip. Forty five minutes from town, it contains three distinct habitats: the montane forest around Ngurdoto Crater, the alkaline Momella Lakes, and the alpine slopes of Mount Meru. Because there are no lion or elephant, Tanzania National Parks permits walking and canoeing here, which no other northern circuit park allows. Drifting a canoe past a giraffe drinking at the lake edge is a different experience entirely from watching from a vehicle. Mount Meru itself is a three or four day trek and excellent acclimatisation before Kilimanjaro.
