Tarangire holds the largest elephant population in northern Tanzania and a landscape defined by ancient baobabs. In the dry season the river draws game in concentrations that rival the Serengeti.
Tarangire is the most underrated park on the northern circuit. Most itineraries give it a single day, and most guests wish they had given it two. The Tarangire River runs through the length of the park and in the dry months from July it is the only permanent water for many kilometres, which pulls in elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and the predators behind them. Elephant herds of eighty or more are routine. The baobabs give the landscape a character quite unlike the open Serengeti plains, and the birdlife is exceptional, with over 550 species recorded including the yellow-collared lovebird and the ashy starling, both near-endemic to this area.
