The Serengeti is the most famous wildlife area on earth and the stage for the Great Migration. Its short-grass plains, granite kopjes and riverine forests support the highest density of large predators in Africa.
The name comes from the Maa word "siringet", meaning the place where the land runs on forever, and standing on the southern plains you understand it immediately. The Serengeti covers almost 15,000 square kilometres and forms a single ecosystem with the Maasai Mara across the Kenyan border and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to the south east. What makes it exceptional is not any single species but the scale of the annual movement. Around 1.5 million wildebeest and 250,000 zebra circle the ecosystem continuously, following the rain, and the predators follow them. The central Seronera valley holds resident game all year, which is why most short itineraries base there. Serious migration travellers move north to Kogatende between July and October, or south to Ndutu between December and March.
